SANGIOVESE … AN ITALIAN CLASSIC

Sangiovese is the most typical red wine from the Romagna area, in Italy. It is a real symbol of Romagna, the land of good living and good food. Climate here creates favourable conditions for its growth: warm summers alternated to cold winters and day-night temperature variation permit perfect grape ripening. The Sangiovese is one of the most famous wines in the world. Ruby red in colour, its delicate bouquet includes violet and red fruits notes. Dry on the mouth, harmonic, slightly tannic, with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste.

The history of Sangiovese in Romagna goes back for centuries. According to an old and imaginative local tradition the name comes from Sanctus Zeus, the god Jupiter of the Romans. The first historical news about the Sangiovese dates back to the “Trattato della Coltivazione della Vite” (Treatise about Grapes Growing, 1600) by Solderini and to “L’Agricoltore Sperimentato” (The Experienced Farmer, 1726) by Trinci. From the XIX century, news referring to this grape variety has been steadily increasing and Italian as well as foreign vine writers have been describing the Sangiovese with such an interest and an evaluation as to place it at the top of national and international oenology.

Its grapes concur -alone or blended- to the production of many famous wines like the Brunello di Montalcino, the various Chianti, the Nobile di Montepulciano and many more in the Centre and North of Italy.
